Alessandro
Volta, born in Como in the later 18th century, is credited with
inventing an electric battery consisting of zinc and copper electrodes
immersed in brine.
Probably the only past Como citizen of note, he has a statue in one of
Como's main squares showing, apparently, a voltaic pile and a large
chapel by the lakeside.
He lived well into the 19th century and, along with Galvani, carried
out a large number of electrical and scientific experiments.
