SARS/PARC Quiz Night

It was a cold and frost night …..

Our annual quiz with Shrewsbury Club was held at Belan on Thursday 25th November and considering the inclement weather we had a good turnout. Rather more from Powys attended, so feeling charitable, we lent the opposition a couple of our good brains which we rather lived to regret.

Pete GW8COE and Keith MW3YYR were in control and by half time we were leading 17/16.

The delicious spread at half time must have numbed our side’s brains as in part two we were finally trounced by 26 points to 35.

The questions were varied and in some cases rather controversial but we all had a good time and laughed a lot. There were technical and general knowledge questions We were amazed to hear that a number plate had sold for £113 million however someone had got rather carried away with their zeros and it was only £113,000!

Many thanks to Pete and Keith and also the lovely ladies who provided yet again a fabulous supper.

So once again we lost control of that lovely trophy. I think it would look good on my mantelpiece. For those who may not know, the trophy is an Ediswan V1505 power triode mounted very tastefully on a wooden plinth.

N.B. Must do better.

November 2010

PARC Junk Sale November 11th 2010

A good number of members assembled at Belan for our Autumn Junk Sale. It was a very stormy night and we were pleased to see so many there. Just one member from Shrewsbury Club came, thanks Les for braving the elements.

Glyn took to the rostrum with his usual supply of hats and although there was perhaps slightly less on display than other times we were all ready to part with our cash and by the end of the evening there was very little left to take to Potter’s or charity shops. £119.90 was made and in addition, donations were received amounting to £5.20.

Sadly Glyn has now left the club and he and Irene were thanked for their years of service by Pete GW8COE  and presented with; to Glyn some real ales and chocolates to Irene.

We had our tea and biscuits after the auction and everyone had a good natter as always. Let’s hope it wasn’t all about radios, however, I doubt the menfolk had any other subjects to discuss.

Barbara Church had been sent some flowers following an op and Hugh thanked us all for those. I have since received an email from Barbara who is recovering nicely.

Next meeting on November 25th will be the quiz, with Shrewsbury the away team this time. Jean has the refreshments (finger food to save on the washing up) all organised and let’s hope we all have our brainy heads on that night!

After that we shall look forward to our Christmas Social on December 10th followed by a Christmas meal at the Lion Caerhowell on December 18th.

How true is the following?

The sunspots were roaring and the Old Dxer was working DX night and day.
The faithful XYL had had it with his QRZing and blew her stack.
"DX DX DX - thats all you ever think about!" she groaned
"Why I'll bet you don't even remember our wedding date!!

"I mostly certainly do" was the immediate reply.
"It was June 14th, 1958 – That’s the night I worked

October 2010

Powis ARC met as usual at Belan on Thursday 14th October. There was no speaker booked so an evening of “Who are you?” was held. A very interesting time followed as members and their wives spilled the beans of their past (well what they chose to reveal). Interestingly 10 out of 16 members and wives present had been employed by the GPO albeit taking very varied paths. We had a job to find time to stop for tea but we did and continued quite late after a really fun evening.

Jean has agreed to take on Social organiser in chief and will have emailed you all with details of the plans so far. There will be more I don’t doubt.

Next month, Thursday November 11th is our old favourite THE JUNK SALE. Bring along your old stuff to be recycled – yes that includes what you bought last year and really couldn’t get it to work.

On November 25th we do battle with Shrewsbury ARC in the Quiz at Belan so get your thinking caps on now.
